Solar Dye Kit

from $5.00

The easiest (and maybe most fun) way to learn about natural dyes, these kits include yarn that has been mordanted (heated in a metal salt) so that the natural dye materials bond with yarn for lasting color. Choose your color (i.e., dye material) and size of yarn. Written instructions are included, as well as a link to an 8-minute video demonstrating different techniques. The jar includes everything you need — just add water and sunshine!

  • The Sock weight version is Merino/Cashmere/Nylon (400 yds/100g).

  • The DK weight version is Merino/Cashmere/Nylon (231 yds/100g).

Dye materials can be bought individually for cochineal, coreopsis, and marigold.

If you do not need the jar, you can select that option at check out.

Note that the aqua color for the logwood comes from the mordant used. Logwood needs a little help to keep from fading too fast, and we use copper sulfate for the logwood kit. The other kits use alum (like the form found in grocery stores used in pickling), and that mordant does not add color to the skein.
